Why is my immigration application taking longer than others?

Is your immigration application taking longer than other people’s? Learn the reasons, what to check while it is pending and where to submit an official enquiry or report.

Review my application with TRALIF

“I submitted my papers before someone else, but their residence has already been approved and I am still waiting.” If this happens to you, you probably check your application often and wonder whether something is wrong.

Waiting is worrying, especially when you need permission to work, organise your life or reunite with family. Seeing others receive an earlier response can increase that uncertainty.

Another application being decided sooner does not prove there is a problem with yours. Understanding a delay requires checking the authorisation requested, steps taken and pending notifications.

Why is my immigration application taking so long?

Two applications may look alike but need different procedures. Two people may say they submitted “residence papers”, while one applied for arraigo and the other as a Spanish citizen’s family member.

An initial application also differs from a renewal or modification. Each procedure has its own requirements, documents and decision period. Before comparing waiting times, check that it really is the same procedure.

The Ministry publishes information sheets about immigration authorisations. Even for the same permit, personal circumstances and documents may require different checks.

If I applied earlier, why does someone else receive a response first?

The submission date matters but does not explain everything during processing. The general rule requires the order of initiation to be respected for matters of the same nature, unless a justified exception applies.

However, this does not guarantee that all applications finish in the same order: one may require additional documents and another may await a report needed for a decision.

Imagine two similar applications. In one, the documents allow assessment to continue; in the other, a detail must be clarified or a document supplied. This can lead to different decision dates.

Without reviewing the specific case, it would not be sound to claim that someone jumped the queue, received preferential treatment or that the slower application was incorrectly submitted.

Is a request for documents delaying your application?

A document request adds a step: the authority asks for a deficiency to be corrected or necessary documents supplied. The notice must be received, a response prepared and the documents submitted and assessed.

La Law 39/2015, Articles 22 and 71, governs suspensions of the decision period and the order of processing. Correcting deficiencies and certain reports can suspend the period under the legal conditions.

A request for documents is not a refusal. What matters is understanding the request, responding within the stated deadline and keeping proof of submission.

The Ministry explains that its processing-time data include the time spent waiting for the applicant to supply documents. General figures do not explain every application’s circumstances.

I supplied everything: why is my application still delayed?

It is natural to think, “Everything has been submitted, so why no response?” Submission allows examination but does not mean assessment is complete. Reports or checks may be needed depending on the procedure and circumstances.

Not receiving a document request does not guarantee immediate approval either. Identifying the specific reason for a delay requires information from your application. Comparing it with a friend’s or an approval on social media does not show what is happening with yours.

My application is still “in progress”: is that a bad sign?

That status alone does not establish a problem or predict a refusal. Nor does it guarantee approval. Distinguish the status message from formally notified communications or decisions.

If the same message persists, check:

  • Which authorisation you requested and when it was submitted.
  • Whether you have the registration receipt.
  • Notifications addressed to you or your representative.
  • Whether documents were requested and a response supplied.
  • The applicable processing period and any suspension.

You can find more information in our guide to checking your immigration application status.

How long does the Immigration Office take to decide?

There is no single period for all authorisations. The legal decision period depends on the procedure requested and must be distinguished from the actual time taken by a particular application.

Check the official information sheet for your authorisation. Do not apply a renewal’s deadline to an arraigo, or residence deadlines to nationality. A status check generally cannot justify claims such as “next week” or “all applications within a month”.

What should you do if your application takes too long?

The first step is to review your application’s actual situation. Gather the submission receipt, notifications and proof of any documents supplied.

That information helps assess whether action is pending, an enquiry is appropriate or another route should be considered. Cases differ: one person may have an outstanding document request; another a complete application whose delay must be assessed under its procedure.

Elapsed time matters, but so does what has happened during that time. Before submitting another application or document, review the existing case and the purpose of the proposed action.

Where can I submit an enquiry or report to the Immigration Office?

To ask about your application or report a problem, use the official form and select the relevant office:

Send an enquiry to the Immigration Office ↗

Explain your situation clearly and have the information needed to identify your application:

  • Full name.
  • NIE or passport.
  • Application number, if available.
  • Submission date.
  • Contact email address.
  • A precise description of your enquiry.

State when you applied, the status shown and what information you need. Avoid unnecessary personal data.

How can I follow up an existing enquiry?

Keep the confirmation email. To add information, respond or ask about an existing enquiry, use the option “Follow up an enquiry”. The enquiry and tracking numbers appear in the confirmation email.

What if my enquiry concerns the 2026 regularisation?

The general form directs information about this process to the official regularisation portal. There is also a dedicated regularisation enquiry form. Follow the official channel’s instructions for your enquiry.

Where can I report a technical error in Mercurio?

If the problem concerns an application’s technical operation, use the Immigration Office technical incident form. This channel is for technical errors; processing questions belong in the appropriate enquiry channel.

Submitting an enquiry does not guarantee an immediate decision or replace responding to document requests or submitting documents through the proper channel.

Frequently asked questions about immigration delays

Does another application being approved sooner mean mine is wrong?

That cannot be inferred from comparing dates. The procedure, documents and steps in your application must be reviewed.

If no documents are requested, is my application approved?

No. The absence of a document request is not a favourable decision. Check notifications and the decision on your application.

Can applications submitted on the same day take different amounts of time?

Yes. They may follow different procedures or require different documents, reports and checks.

Should I submit another application because I have no response?

Before submitting again, check the receipt and existing application. Assess which action suits your circumstances.
