TIE: fingerprint appointment, documents, renewal and replacement

How to obtain TIE: fingerprints, EX-17, passport, decision, photograph, fee and replacement for loss or damage.

Assess my case

The TIE, the Foreigner Identity Card, documents a foreign national’s status in specified cases. Taking fingerprints is part of issuance. Before booking, check that the card stage applies and which authorisation you must prove.

First card or card after renewal

A first TIE requires the qualifying situation or authorisation. After temporary residence renewal, approval usually precedes the new card. A fingerprint appointment alone does not renew authorisation.

The card application deadline is usually one month from approval, entry or effect, depending on authorisation. Check the decision and procedure sheet for the correct starting point.

Fingerprint appointment documents

  • Form EX-17 for the relevant procedure.
  • Valid passport or travel document.
  • Decision, visa and entry evidence where needed.
  • Recent photograph meeting official specifications.
  • Fee receipt for model 790 code 012 under the applicable category.
  • Previous card and additional case documents where relevant.

Check police instructions: address documents after a move or other permit-related evidence may be required. Adapt the list to first issuance, renewal or replacement.

Choosing the correct appointment

Select the province and relevant police fingerprint or card-issuance procedure. Check appointment details and bring legible documents and originals where required. NIE assignment appointments are different.

The holder performs required personal and biometric steps. A representative can organise the file but cannot replace your presence for required personal acts.

Loss, theft or damage: TIE replacement

Document loss or theft and assess replacement. Check any required police report, documents and fee. If authorisation is nearing expiry, also check renewal.

Replacement neither extends permit validity nor automatically corrects expired authorisation. For travel during issuance, check return documents before leaving.

Collection and checking details

Keep the receipt and follow collection instructions. Production time varies between stations. Check name, NIE, validity and remarks on receipt to spot errors.

For long-term residence, distinguish periodic card renewal from renewing temporary authorisation. TRALIF helps identify your stage and prepare specific documents.

Frequently asked questions about TIE and fingerprints

Can I attend fingerprints without approval?

It depends on the basis for the card. Check proof of authorisation; a pending application normally does not equal approval.

Does paying the fee reserve an appointment?

No. Fee and appointment are separate. Check the category before paying.

Can I travel with my fingerprint receipt?

Do not treat it as an automatic card replacement for re-entry. Check return-authorisation requirements and your route.
