Self-employed residence and work permit: requirements

Documents for residence and work as a self-employed person: business plan, investment, licences, qualifications and authorisation stages.

Assess my case

The self-employed residence and work authorisation allows self-employment when immigration and business requirements are met. Tax registration or setting up a company alone does not grant residence or work permission.

Initial authorisation or modification: which applies?

The ordinary initial application follows the route for applicants abroad. If you already hold an authorisation in Spain, a modification or existing permission allowing self-employment may apply. First check your current permit and its scope.

An innovative business may fall under Law 14/2013. Entrepreneur residence is not equivalent to any self-employed business and has a specific authority and requirements.

Self-employment requirements

Required licences or notifications, professional qualifications, necessary investment and resources to sustain the business are assessed. Regulated professions may require recognition of qualifications or professional registration.

Investment is not proven by a number in a plan alone: it must fit the premises, equipment, stock, insurance and business expenses. No single amount guarantees approval for every business.

How to prepare a useful business plan

Explain your product or service, target customers, operating location and how you will attract clients. Include investment, financing, income and expense forecasts and available resources. Support figures with documents and reasonable assumptions.

Hairdressing, retail and digital services require different evidence. Provide genuine quotations, contracts or agreements where available, without presenting forecasts as guaranteed sales.

Common documents

  • Complete passport, relevant form and required personal documents.
  • Business plan and evidence of investment and financing.
  • Licences, declarations of compliance or proof of necessary procedures.
  • Qualifications, experience and professional credentials appropriate to the activity.
  • Documents for the premises or operating location where relevant.
  • Certificates and fees required by the immigration and consular route.

An assessment from a specialist organisation may support the plan under accepted rules, but does not automatically replace licences or guarantee approval.

Application, visa and starting the activity

For the initial route, check the relevant authorisation, visa, entry and Social Security affiliation and registration stages. For a modification in Spain, the form, eligible applicant and procedure differ. Coordinate deadlines before irreversible spending or starting the business.

After approval, monitor Social Security formalities, tax obligations and the card. Keep evidence of activity, income and compliance to maintain residence, and prepare renewal before expiry.

Frequently asked questions about self-employed residence and work

Can I become self-employed with any residence permit?

It depends on the work permission attached to your authorisation. Some allow self-employment; others require modification first.

How much must I invest?

Enough for a viable project and its requirements. The specific activity determines the budget; no universal amount guarantees residence.

Does a small business qualify for entrepreneur residence?

Not automatically. The entrepreneur route under Law 14/2013 requires specific characteristics and differs from ordinary self-employment.
