Internship or job-search residence: differences and requirements
Internship and post-study job-search residence differences: education, agreement or contract, resources, documents and work.
Assess my caseThe internship residence and authorisation for job search are different routes. They may help after certain studies, but education requirements, applicants and permitted activities differ. Choosing by name alone may lead to an unsuitable application.
Internship residence: who qualifies
It covers those who obtained a higher-education qualification in the two years before applying or are studying towards one, subject to status conditions. Internships must match the academic field and qualification level.
A host organisation and appropriate internship agreement or contract are required. Programme, educational aims, duration, hours, supervision and legal relationship are assessed. An informal permission-to-help letter is insufficient.
An agreement and a contract are different
Documents and financial conditions differ between hosting agreements and employment contracts. Without a contract, check resources and insurance; with one, check employment terms and the employer’s capacity to meet obligations.
Authorisation allows participation in the approved internship programme. It is not general permission for unrelated employment.
Job search after higher education
This authorisation is for graduates from an authorised Spanish higher-education institution at least at European Qualifications Framework level 6, meeting other conditions. Check previous stay, qualification, insurance and resources.
Its purpose is to seek employment matching the studies or start a business project during the authorised period. It does not authorise work during the search: once you find a job or have a project, obtain the appropriate authorisation before working.
Documents to gather
- Passport, previous authorisation and personal documents.
- Qualification or certificate and evidence of study level and dates.
- Internships: agreement or contract and host-organisation documents.
- Job search: resources, healthcare coverage and the relevant form.
- Criminal records where required, fees and family documents where applicable.
Submission and deadlines
The host organisation applies for internships through the prescribed route; the student or representative applies for job search. Do not use the same form for both.
The job-search information sheet provides sixty calendar days before stay expiry and ninety afterwards, with legal consequences for post-expiry filing. Duration may reach twenty-four months. Check calendar and decision before planning activities.
Compare with a direct switch to work
With a suitable contract and conditions met, also assess switching studies directly to residence and work. Without employment, check job-search resources and restrictions; for company training, examine programme content. TRALIF compares these options with your qualification and current permit.
