Digital nomad residence: international remote work in Spain

Digital nomad permit requirements: remote work, foreign company, experience, resources, Social Security, visa and residence.

Assess my case

The digital nomad residence is international telework authorisation for third-country nationals working remotely through computing and communication tools for companies outside Spain. Owning a laptop or working online alone is insufficient.

Employee or self-employed professional

Employment must be for companies outside Spain. Professional activity may include Spanish companies within the statutory 20% of total activity limit. Correct classification helps prepare contracts, certificates and Social Security obligations.

Prove genuine continuous company or group activity for at least one year and a prior employment or professional relationship of at least three months, plus remote-work feasibility. Documents must describe the activity and authorisation to work remotely from Spain.

Qualifications and financial means

Prove an accepted qualification or at least three years’ professional experience under the law. Certificates must explain work and periods; a professional-network profile does not replace all evidence.

Funds are calculated using current SMI and prescribed percentages for the holder and family. Check the updated threshold, currency, frequency and actual availability of income. A previous year’s monthly figure is not a permanent requirement.

Social Security and healthcare coverage

This needs particular attention. Meet the applicable affiliation or registration obligation, or prove coverage under an international instrument valid for work in Spain where applicable. An employer’s statement that you contribute abroad is insufficient.

Documents depend on the relationship and origin country. Healthcare coverage must also suit the case. Residence authorisation and tax obligations are separate: the permit does not automatically grant a special tax regime.

Digital nomad documents

  • Passport, form for the chosen route and required personal documents.
  • Contract, company or client certificates and proof of the prior relationship.
  • Documents proving company activity and remote work.
  • Qualification or experience evidence.
  • Funds, healthcare coverage and Social Security compliance.
  • Criminal records and family documents where applicable.

Visa or authorisation from Spain

There is a consular visa route and residence authorisation requested in Spain through the Large Companies and Strategic Groups Unit, subject to lawful-status and filing conditions. Visas last up to one year; residence authorisation can reach three years unless a shorter period is requested.

Renewal requires maintaining conditions. Monitor changes in employer, clients, income and coverage; initial approval does not remove ongoing obligations.
