Non-lucrative residence: financial means, insurance and documents
Spanish non-lucrative residence requirements: 400% of IPREM, family members, health insurance, visa, documents and renewal.
Assess my caseThe non-lucrative residence allows living in Spain without employment or professional activity. It may suit those with sufficient means, but does not permit accepting a job or provide a general solution for remote work.
Non-lucrative residence requirements
The initial route is requested abroad through consular processing. Criminal records, entry and residence status, passport, health conditions and financial means are assessed. It is not automatic regularisation for someone already irregular in Spain.
Adequate healthcare coverage with an authorised insurer and, where applicable, a medical certificate are required in addition to resources. Travel assistance insurance is not necessarily equivalent to residence coverage.
Required funds: IPREM and family members
The rule uses 400% of monthly IPREM for the applicant and an additional 100% for each family member, for the requested period. Check current IPREM and calculate the whole period; do not reuse another year’s table or a figure for a different permit.
Accepted evidence must show source, availability and sufficiency of funds: savings, pensions or other income as applicable. Unidentified statements or income dependent on continued work need closer review.
Visa and residence documents
- Form EX-01 and relevant visa application.
- Complete passport with required validity.
- Criminal record certificates for the relevant countries and periods.
- Medical certificate and health insurance documents.
- Bank certificates and other evidence of funds for the entire period.
- Family documents if accompanying relatives are included.
- Fees and additional documents of the competent consular office.
Check foreign-certificate formalities and validity. The competent consulate depends on your residence district; booking elsewhere may delay preparation.
Application, entry and card
The initial application follows the consular route. If approved, collect the visa and enter within the stated deadlines. Initial authorisation lasts one year and starts upon entry to Spain under legal rules.
Personally apply for TIE within one month of entry. Keep visa, decision and entry evidence to document validity and prepare continued residence.
Renewal or switch to work authorisation
Renewal requires checking resources for the renewal period, insurance, actual residence and other conditions. Meeting funds requirements initially is insufficient if circumstances changed.
Before starting work, assess modification or an authorisation allowing the activity. International remote work may fit the teleworker authorisation with its own conditions.
Frequently asked questions about non-lucrative residence
Can I work remotely with non-lucrative residence?
This authorisation is for residence without employment or professional activity. Assess a route permitting remote work and its conditions before working.
Can I include my family?
Family members may qualify through the specified route, proving relationships, additional resources and other requirements.
Is travel insurance sufficient?
