Renewing residence permission: deadlines, documents and authorisation types

How to renew residence permission: deadlines, permit-specific documents, fees, submission and the distinction between renewal and TIE fingerprints.

Assess my case

To renew residence permission first identify your authorisation. Employment, self-employment, non-lucrative residence, reunification and Spanish nationals’ relatives have different rules. The card date helps planning, but the decision establishes the permit and conditions.

Renewing authorisation or renewing the TIE

Authorisation is the residence right granted by the authorities; TIE is the document proving it. Temporary residence usually requires renewing authorisation before requesting a new card. For long-term residence, periodic card renewal is not a new temporary-authorisation application.

Booking fingerprints does not replace submitting renewal. Check the stage before paying a fee or preparing photographs.

When to apply

Many general-regime renewals and extensions allow the two months before expiry and three months afterwards, with consequences for late filing. Check your authorisation before applying this rule: EU-regime and other permits have particularities.

Timely filing may extend the previous permit’s validity until the decision. Keep the receipt and separately check return-authorisation requirements for travel.

Documents that vary by permit

  • Employment: employment history, contracts, activity status and documents for the applicable renewal grounds.
  • Self-employment: continued activity and compliance with tax and Social Security obligations, among other evidence.
  • Non-lucrative residence: resources for the required period, insurance and other maintenance conditions.
  • Family reunification: relationship, sponsor status and applicable financial or family requirements.
  • Arraigo permits: check whether modification or extension applies and its specific conditions; do not automatically use an employment-renewal list.

A valid passport, form and procedure fee are usually also required. Exact documents depend on the permit and renewal grounds. Organise previous decisions and notices too.

Can I renew while unemployed?

Work permits have renewal grounds beyond staying with the same employer. Worked periods, reasons for termination, benefits, active job search or other legal conditions may matter. Unemployment does not automatically mean either refusal or approval.

Check employment history, dates and employment-service documents. If a requirement is unmet, assess another possible route before submitting an incomplete application.

Submission and follow-up

Apply to the competent authority through an accepted channel. Check form, fee category and file legibility; keep the receipt. Monitor notifications: a document request has its own deadline even if tracking still says “processing”.

After approval, request the new TIE where applicable. Renewal duration varies by authorisation; not every permit renews for the same number of years.

Frequently asked questions about residence renewal

Does an expired card always prevent renewal?

It depends on elapsed time and the permit. Some later applications are allowed with legal consequences; have your dates assessed promptly.

Can I travel with the receipt?

The receipt alone does not replace documents needed to return to Spain. Check card, passport and possible return authorisation.

Which fee should I pay?

The current fee and category for the procedure. Authorisation renewal and TIE issuance are separate items.
