Student stay in Spain: requirements, application and extension
Student-stay requirements: institution and admission, funds, insurance, application in Spain or at a consulate, work and extension.
Assess my caseThe student stay allows you to remain in Spain for studies accepted under the rules. It has its own regime: not every enrolment qualifies, and student stay is not treated as residence for every legal purpose.
Which studies qualify
The regulation distinguishes higher education, post-compulsory secondary education and other training activities. The institution, course type, delivery mode and admission requirements must fit the relevant category.
Before paying, request programme details, institution recognition, the calendar and admission document. Do not choose a course solely because it advertises “visa eligibility”. Assess the course and your entry status together.
Financial requirements and health insurance
You need funds for living costs and return travel; study fees do not count as maintenance funds. The study information sheet uses 100% of monthly IPREM for students, with particular rules for prepaid accommodation and additional percentages for family members.
Valid healthcare coverage for the period is also checked, and criminal records and a medical certificate depending on duration and route. Travel insurance or an unsupported financial-support letter may fail the requirements. Check holders, coverage, dates and access to funds.
Applying through a consulate or from Spain
The consular route allows a study visa application within the relevant consular district. Applying from Spain depends on study type, age, lawful status and deadlines. Not every course permits an application from Spain.
The general advance period is two months before studies begin, subject to duly proven exceptional cases. When applying in Spain, also monitor expiry of your lawful status. Coordinate both dates before booking or starting the programme.
Documents for student stay
- Passport and consular or administrative route form.
- Admission and programme and institution documents.
- Evidence of funds and, where relevant, prepaid accommodation.
- Health insurance and required personal certificates.
- Family documents if accompanying relatives apply through an accepted route.
- Fees and documents specific to the competent office.
Can I work while studying?
Work permission depends on the study category and authorisation. In specified cases, work compatible with studies may be allowed up to the general limit of 30 hours weekly; do not automatically extend this to every activity or family member.
Check your decision and applicable rules before accepting a contract. Attendance, academic progress and continued studies remain essential: work does not replace the purpose of the stay.
Extension and completion of studies
For extension, check the deadline, enrolment or continuation, academic progress, funds and required health coverage. Keep academic certificates and documents for each course.
After finishing, consider switching to residence and work, internships or job search according to your level and circumstances. These are separate procedures with different work permissions.
Frequently asked questions about student stay
Does any academy qualify for a visa?
No. The course and institution must meet the requested category’s requirements. Check the programme before enrolling.
Can I apply after entering as a tourist?
Applications in Spain are limited to specified cases and conditions. Check the course, age, lawful status and dates.
Does student stay count as residence for nationality?
No. Student stay and residence are different legal statuses; time calculations must be assessed separately for each procedure.
