Certificate linking NIE and DNI

How to prove that your old NIE and new DNI belong to the same person after acquiring Spanish nationality.

Assess my case

What the NIE–DNI concordance certificate is

After acquiring Spanish nationality and obtaining your DNI, many records still use your old NIE. This official National Police certificate proves that both numbers identify the same person. It helps update your identity while preserving links to contracts, properties and previous records.

NIE and DNI numbers are different. This is not renewal of a foreigner card or an application for a new residence permit. Its purpose is to prove continuity of identity after a change of nationality.

What it can be used for

It may help when a bank, Social Security, an authority, the Property Registry or another organisation needs to link old documents to your Spanish identification. Not every organisation always requires it: ask which document they accept for your particular update.

A resolution published in the BOE in May 2026 expressly recognises its public and official status for linking the old foreigner number and the new DNI. This does not replace checking any additional documents required for each procedure.

Where to apply and how to prepare the appointment

Find a National Police office that issues concordance certificates. The official office locator lists available services. Check whether an appointment is required and which option to select; a fingerprint or residence-renewal appointment should not be assumed to cover this service.

If you are obtaining your first DNI, ask the issuing unit how to obtain concordance afterwards. Arrangements differ between offices; do not assume every office issues it automatically or at the same time.

Documents to have ready

  • Valid Spanish DNI and your old NIE details.
  • Previous document showing your NIE, if you still have it.
  • Passport or other identification documents if requested by the unit.
  • Form, fee receipt or other attachments only as instructed by the competent service.

This is an indicative list for your enquiry. Confirm exact documents, application method and any fee before travelling. Also check name, surname or birth-date discrepancies that may require civil registry documents.

What to do after obtaining it

  1. Check that NIE, DNI and personal details are correct.
  2. Keep the original and a legible copy.
  3. Request an identification update from each organisation retaining your NIE.
  4. Keep update receipts and check contracts, bills and records.

The certificate does not automatically update all databases. A banking or administrative issue may continue until you notify the organisation through its own channel. First identify which records require changes.

Frequently asked questions about concordance certificates

Does my NIE become my DNI number?

No. They are different numbers. The certificate proves that they belong to the same person.

Is it issued automatically with the first DNI?

Do not assume so. Ask the police office whether it issues the certificate and how to apply.

Will my details change in every authority’s records?

Not automatically. Notify organisations that need the change and provide the documents they request.
