Invitation letter for travel to Spain
What an invitation letter proves, who can request it and which documents to prepare to host a visitor in Spain.
Assess my caseWhat an invitation letter is and its purpose
An invitation letter is issued by the Police at the request of someone who will host a foreign visitor at home. It proves private accommodation during a visit to Spain. It may be needed for a short-stay visa application or to demonstrate entry conditions at border control.
It is not a residence permit, work authorisation or visa. It does not guarantee entry either: travellers must meet the other conditions for their nationality and trip, such as a valid passport, a visa where required, financial means and proof of the purpose and duration of the stay.
Who can invite and which home must be documented
The host applies and must meet Interior Ministry identification and residence requirements. The home must be available for the guest on the stated dates. Ownership deeds, a tenancy agreement or another document proving availability may be used, depending on the police unit’s requirements.
The address and guest details must be accurate and consistent. An invitation for tourism or a family visit should not be presented as a way to settle permanently in Spain.
Documents and information for the application
- Host’s identity document and evidence of status where applicable.
- Proof that the accommodation is available for the visitor.
- Complete guest details, passport, address and nationality.
- Relationship between host and guest and planned arrival and departure dates.
- Form and fee receipts specified by the competent office.
Before booking, review the documents published by the police station responsible for your address. Document submission and collection are not organised identically in every unit.
How to apply and what happens afterwards
- Identify the competent police office and its appointment system.
- Prepare the application with complete details and housing documents.
- Submit the request and respond to checks or requests for documents.
- Pay the applicable fees following the instructions received.
- Collect the document and send it to the guest in time for their visa or trip.
There is no identical practical processing time for every police station. Avoid committing to a trip on the assumption that the letter will be issued immediately. Also check with the consulate or border authority how the document must be provided.
Common mistakes when preparing an invitation
Common problems include dates inconsistent with the trip, incorrect passport details, missing accommodation evidence and confusing the letter with other entry requirements. Check that the visitor’s name matches their passport and keep copies of the application and issued document.
Frequently asked questions about invitation letters
Does an invitation letter replace a visa?
No. It proves private accommodation. If your nationality requires a visa for the trip, you must apply and meet its requirements.
Can I work with an invitation letter?
No. A short visit does not in itself allow work or convert the stay into residence.
Is there a fee and a fixed processing time?
The procedure involves fees. Check current amounts and police unit instructions; processing times may vary.
