Applying for NIE in Spain: requirements, documents and appointment
What NIE is and how to request assignment: economic, professional or social reason, EX-15, documents, fee and difference from TIE.
Assess my caseIf you need to apply for NIE, first check whether you already have a number and what you need it for. The Foreigner Identity Number identifies you to Spanish authorities. Assignment does not grant residence or work permission.
NIE, residence and TIE: differences
NIE is a personal number. Residence authorisation recognises immigration status; TIE documents it in the specified cases. “Renew my NIE” often means renewing a permit, card or certificate; identifying which avoids the wrong appointment.
If you had an immigration case, check decisions and documents before requesting another assignment. Card renewal does not change the number.
When to request assignment
Assignment may be requested for economic, professional or social interests connected with Spain, proving the reason and meeting procedural conditions. Purchases, some business matters or documented transactions may justify it, but it does not regularise irregular status.
If you need to live or work in Spain, assess the relevant authorisation. Obtaining a transaction number does not replace that assessment.
Documents for NIE
- EX-15 completed for the specific procedure.
- Accepted passport or identity document, with required copies.
- Documents proving the economic, professional or social interest.
- Receipt for the relevant procedure fee.
- Sufficient representation if an authorised person acts and this is permitted in the case.
Check names, birth date and nationality across documents. A generic reason may require further evidence.
Where to apply and how to book
In Spain, apply at the competent immigration or Police unit depending on the procedure. Abroad, the prescribed consular route may be used. Check office information, exact appointment type and form before booking.
NIE assignment, European citizen certificates and fingerprints are separate appointments. Availability and organisation vary by province; no nationwide appointment or issuance date can be guaranteed.
After obtaining the number
Keep the assignment certificate or document. If details change or an organisation requires evidence of immigration status, the number alone may not suffice: check the required certificate, permit or card.
Frequently asked questions about NIE applications
Does NIE allow work?
Not on its own. You need the relevant right or work authorisation.
Does my NIE number expire?
The number identifies the person. The document or permit containing it may expire; these are separate matters.
Do I need a new NIE when renewing TIE?
You normally keep the same number. Renewal concerns the permit or card, not assignment of a new NIE.
